A Movie for the Child in All of Us: A Wrinkle in Time Review

Did you ever read this book as a child? A Wrinkle in Time was one of my favorite books. I remember getting lost in this story. Feeling like I could relate to Meg. She was me. She was every young girl. Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time hits theaters March 9th and after seeing it twice already, I’ve got some advice for you. Leave all of your cloud grown up inhibitions and preconceived notions at the door. This movie is for the 12 year old version of you. Let the child come out and watch it. Truly a gift.

Director Ava Duvernay was very clear in the fact that this movie was made for children 8-12. It speaks to them and the world they live in. The messaging is so timely and perfect for girls growing up right now and it’s wonderful for conversation starters, especially those centered around self love. With a very strong and powerful performance by Storm Reid who plays Meg, this movie shows us one young girls battle to not only find the courage to be herself, but the courage to love herself and to be a light to the world.

When you watch this movie, you join young Meg on a somewhat whimsical and magical (and scary, at times) journey as she tries to find her father and along the way, finds herself and so much more. This movie addresses some really timely issues for kids: bullying, self doubt, self discovery and more. At the very core of it all though is relationship, and it’s such wonderful messaging about family and then things that we fight for when we love people.

Who is this movie for?

It’s really for the child in all of us BUT you have to take your inner twelve year old with you to the theater when you seen it. In terms of age recommendations, this movie was made for children 8-12. It does have a few scary moments, but they all have great resolution and I would definitely make it a point to talk through some of the darker scenes which could spur some amazing conversations in regards to life lessons, decisions, and outcomes.

My thoughts.

I have now seen the movie twice. The first time I watched it, I watched it as a mom. I watched as someone who had read the book almost 40 years ago. I liked it but had many questions, I struggled with a few moments and scenarios. I watched it again at the premiere (after our cast interviews) and challenged myself to watch it as the twelve year old version of myself and I have to tell you, it was an entirely different movie when I took out those forty plus years of influence, expectation and preconceived notions.

The second time I watched it, It was magical, it was fun! Creative! I was able to get lost in the movie, just like I had gotten lost in the book as a child. So, that is my recommendation for you. See this movie and allow yourself to let go of what you know, and what you think and what all of those years since childhood have done to take you away from those childhood places. If you see it through young eyes, this movie won’t disappoint. After all, those are the eyes that this movie was made for!

And take your children. They already have that magical gift of diving into a world and enjoying it.

Wrinkle in Time hits theaters March 9th!
