The CUTEST Mug Topper Cookie Ideas

I’ve seen mug huggers shaped like gingerbread men and gingerbread houses many times, but I haven’t seen any mug toppers that are shaped like these that we are sharing today in this blog post. Thanks to our friends at Wilton, I’m excited to share with you these awesome creations that will be perfect for your holiday baking!

For starters, you’ll need a good sugar cookie recipe OR a store bought sugar cookie dough. You’ll find my personal favorite Sugar Cookie Recipe here, it’s a good one!

Obviously, the first step to this process is making and baking your cookies. I love to take them out just as the edges are turning brown.

To cut notches into the cookies, we used a metal spatula for the main notch, and then a metal straw to make a rounded shape at the top. Wilton also has some fun cookie cutters that already have notches, like this Mini Gingerbread House Mug Hugger cookie cutter set.  Also, I have to mention that this Wilton Perfect Results 3-Tier Cooking Rack is beyond amazing.

Let your cookies cool before decorating. And then have a blast making them all pretty and colorful! Wilton has some amazing frosting and icing color choices along with a huge selection of candy sprinkles and toppings

How cute are these darling mug toppers!? Perfect for a cold glass of milk, a hot cup of hot chocolate or a cup of coffee. Easy to make with any sugar cookie recipe, I'm also sharing our favorite sugar cookie recipe so you can easily make these darling mug hugger cookies during the holidays! Such an easy way to make a fun addition to your hot chocolate bar or surprise the kids with these fun mug sitter cookies after a day of sledding out in the cold weather. Such a fun and easy idea that anyone can make!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup coconut oil, solid
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1-½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • About ½ cup of powdered sugar or cornstarch for rolling the dough

Instructions

In large bowl, combine sugar, butter, coconut oil, and cream. Beat on medium high with a mixer for 1 minute.

Add vanilla, egg, baking powder, and sea salt, and mix well.

Slowly add in flour ½ cup at a time. Mix well.

Split the dough into three equal pieces and wrap each section in plastic wrap. *You can also freeze this dough to thaw at a later time, and I will often double this recipe to do just that. Place dough in the refrigerator to rest for 1 hour. This will help the dough stiffen a little and it will be easier to work with.

Heat oven to 400 degrees and line cookie sheets with baking mats or parchment paper. *I love baking mats to help the cookies to bake evenly.

Sprinkle powdered sugar or cornstarch lightly on the rolling surface. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. I like to bring out the cookie dough as needed (which is why I separate it into thirds. This way the remainder of the dough stays firm and easy to work with)

Dust the cookie cutter with powdered sugar or cornstarch and cut out your cookies. Place the cookies on the lined pans about an inch apart.

Bake the cookies at 400 degress for 5 to 9 minutes. The edges should be lightly browned — keep a close eye on them to get them just right.

Once almost cooled, take a metal spatula or knife to cut out the notches to the cookies can sit on mugs or glasses. We used a metal straw to complete the top of the notch and give it that rounded shape.
