The Hill Movie Review (Coming to Theaters August 25th!)

Do  you love inspirational movies? The Hill is the heartwarming tale based on the true story of Rickey Hill who overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to fulfill his dream of playing pro baseball. I’m excited to share with you my The Hill movie review and some insight into why I found this movie so refreshing and good.

*Disclosure: This is a sponsored post done in partnership with The Hill. All opinions are 100% my own.

A family friendly film, it delivers it’s message of family, faith and never giving up hope in an impactful way. This movie will inspire you to follow your dreams without compromising your beliefs along the way.

Starring Dennis Quaid and Colin Ford and directed by Jeff Celentano, this heartfelt story unfolds over time – allowing you to become immersed in the struggles and the joys of the characters.

The supporting cast includes the amazing Bonnie Bedelia, Joelle Carter and Scott Glenn who help make this wonderful story more impactful and provide some of the best scenes.

About The Hill

The movie begins in a Brenham, Texas, a  small town where Rickey Hill wears braces on his legs due to a degenerative spinal disease. He loves playing baseball but his strict Dad (Dennis Quaid) who is also the church pastor, wants to protect him from further injuries.

Tough times and poverty prove to be challenging, but never deter Rickey from his desire to play in the big leagues. The characters each struggle with their love of family and faith. Gram (played by Bonnie Bedelia) plays the role of the matriarch flawlessly with just the right amount of sass.

There are some humorous moments, including when Rickey and his siblings are playing baseball using a stick and stones and he manages to impress the neighbor. As Rickey gets older and sustains and additional injury, the family becomes more divided on whether he is risking too much by playing baseball.

The Hill has so many underlying lessons scattered throughout, including showing compassion even to those who have not been kind to you, and keeping hope alive despite circumstances.

The Cast of The Hill

Dennis Quaid and Colin Ford stand out in this cast, but so do so many of the supporting cast members. Bonnie Bedelia does a wonderful job portraying Gram, and Scott Glenn as Red Murff nails the role.

I actually really enjoyed the performances of Randy Houser as a neighbor, and both Mila Harris and Siena Bjornerud as the younger and older Gracie. Some of the more humorous moments involved scenes with Gracie, who packed a lot of personality into the role.

My Review of The Hill Movie

I think you are going to like and admire the characters in this heartwarming film, with the powerful message that determination, faith, and family can overcome life’s obstacles. There are definitely some strong religious and biblical undertones however, I do love that they are shared in a way that allows for growth and discussion.

The main character himself actually pushes back against what his pastor father’s biblical interpretations are. In a bit of a “Footloose” type story line, young Rickey hold strong to his convictions and desires to live his life and go after his dreams while still holding true to his love for God and religious beliefs.

I love family friendly movies, and this one definitely is a feel good movie the whole family can enjoy. It is rated PG due to smoking and thematic content. The movie delivers on telling the story of Rickey Hill in a straight forward manner, depicting the struggle of overcoming poverty to achieve a dream.

I do feel like this is a movie for the entire family, there are so many wonderful lessons in this film and in my opinion – it was a breath of fresh air to watch a simple storyline that has some truly wonderful moments and lessons. This is not a flashy film with special effects, but a movie that will make you laugh and cry. It’s truly a feel good movie that made my heart happy, and I think you’ll feel the same. Add to the fact that it’s based on the true story of Rickey Hill, it’s quite inspiring as well!
