Unicorn Donut Recipe

We are all about unicorns and rainbows over here and this Magical Unicorn Donut recipe has been a huge hit. These cute little donuts are perfect for special occasions and hands down more exciting then regular donut options!

My daughter loves to make mini donuts and we think this fun recipe would be great for unicorn themed birthday parties or even fun for classroom party ideas.

One thing that we love about this recipe is that it’s easy for kids to help with.

You could do some things to make these fun Unicorn doughnuts even fancier – like edible glitters or added unicorn horns but even just as they are, they are magical!

My daughter loves to make mini donuts and we’ve tried all kinds of frosting methods, but this is one of the easiest.

You can also obviously change this recipe up based on the color combination and donut flavoring that you would like and we’ve also even tried many different cake mixes.

Easy and SO fun, these magical unicorn donuts are perfect for birthday parties or unicorn themed events!

Unicorn Donuts Recipe

Ingredients for making Magical Unicorn Donut Recipe

1 box of white cake mix, any brand
2 egg whites
1/4 C. vegetable oil
1 C. water
purple gel food coloring
pink gel food coloring
1 C. powdered sugar
3 tbsp. heavy cream or Half & Half
1 large freezer storage bags
kitchen scissors
toothpicks
(2) 12 count mini donut pans (any doughnut pan will do)
non-stick cooking spray

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a 12 count mini donut pan with non-stick cooking spray.
Combine the cake mix, egg whites, oil and water. (you can mix by hand or with a hand mixer)
Add a few drops of pink food coloring to the batter and stir to combine.
Scoop the batter into the large freezer bag.
Snip the corner of the freezer bag and fill the mini donut wells with batter.
Bake 6-8 minutes.
Remove from the oven and set on a wire rack or cooling rack to cool.
Once the donuts have cooled, remove them from the donut pan and set aside.

Combine the powdered sugar and creamer.
Add 1 drop of each food coloring to the white glaze.
Using separate spoons (or toothpicks) gently swirl the colors (be careful to not completely mix the colors together).
Dip the donuts one at a time in the glaze and then set them on wax paper. Next add sprinkles or toppings.

After dipping 2-3 donuts in the colored icings, add another drop of each food coloring and gently swirl the colors.
Repeat with all donuts. If you are serving them in the near future, you’ll probably want to let them cool and set up a bit first.

*Makes approximately 36 mini donuts

Now the fun part! Aren’t these the cutest donuts? If you like, you can add sprinkles or sugar glitter to the donut tops or just serve them as they are. They will look magical as part of your unicorn themed party on your unicorn food table. You could also decorate with party favors: colorful streamers, toy little unicorns, party favor bags, and more!

These unicorn themed treats would be so fun for your unicorn themed party! If you make these donuts, maybe consider also making our fun Unicorn pancakes recipe, what a fun combination that would be!

How to make Magical Unicorn Donuts for your Unicorn themed birthday party

Notes for making these magical unicorn donuts:

Any food coloring will work but I really like the Wilton Neon food coloring set linked to above OR you could use a natural food coloring.

Add a few drops of lemon flavoring (or lemon juice) to the glaze if you’d like your frosting to have a hint of citrus flavor.

Throw a donut party! There are so many different ways to make and decorate donuts, and who doesn’t love them!? These are also fun bake sale items, and perfect for little hands to eat!

If you are adding sprinkles to the top of the donuts, I recommend doing so right away as the glaze will set up quickly.

Additional Unicorn Donut Party Ideas

Check your local Michaels Stores (or craft stores) for fun unicorn themed baking accessories or items that will compliment these, like: candy horns, unicorn party bags or boxes, fun paper straws and more!

The most important thing is to have fun making these unicorn donut gems … perfect for birthday parties, gatherings or even just for fun for your unicorn loving littles! *If you want to really jazz them up – as I mentioned above – you could add a little extra cost and purchase little candy unicorn horns and then draw on little eyes with a small piping bag full of black frosting. OR maybe that’s a fun activity that you could leave up to the kids 🙂
