I really like this homemade soap recipe because there is no cooking involved, except for the microwave.
It takes just a few supplies, a small amount of time and the added bonus is that it makes your house smell so wonderful!
I also love the microwave aspect because it makes this an easier project for kids to help with.
My daughter loves to make soaps for different holidays and gifts and this recipe is truly about as easy as it gets!
How to Make Homemade Lemon Hand Soap Bars
Ingredients and Supplies for making Homemade Hand Soap
- A Melt and Pour Soap Base Block (my favorite is this Crafter’s Choice Detergent Free Buttermilk Soap block)
- 10 drops lemon essential oil
- Zest of one lemon
- 3 Drops yellow soap colorant (optional)
- Rectangular soap mold (this is photographed with an older mold set, but my new favorite are these silicone molds)
- Clear glass measuring cup
- Mixing spoon
- Small spray bottle of rubbing alcohol
How to Make Homemade Hand Soap in the Microwave
1. Cut about 10 ice cube sized pieces off your block of soap and place in a clear glass measuring cup. Keep in mind, you can modify this recipe to your liking as you get more comfortable with how the soap turns out. Adjust the ingredients accordingly, but you really can’t mess this up.
2. Microwave your soap on high for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring halfway through to check.
3. Mix in your yellow food coloring and lemon essential oil.
4. Use a cheese grater to get your lemon zest, place a small amount in each mold, and mix the rest in your soap. I have made this soap with both dried zest and fresh and I really don’t see a big difference If you let them zest dry out first you might find that it last longer and it will definitely be more of an exfoliant. But either way is very nice, in my opinion.
5. Pour your melted soap into your molds and spray lightly with rubbing alcohol to prevent air bubbles.
6. Place on a flat surface in your freezer for about 45 minutes.
7. Once your soap is hardened, pull on the side of the mold, and press up on the bottom gently to remove soaps.
These make darling (and wonderfully smelling!) gifts. Tie a pretty paper around them with a bow, make your own labels or arrange them in a basket. I have included some other fun molds and supply ideas for making your own soaps, such a fun and practical gift!
I hope that you enjoy making this DIY Microwave Lemon Hand Soap!
