Actor Mads Mikkelsen as a Villain in Doctor Strange

Interview: Doctor Strange Villain Actor Mads Mikkelsen
I’m not a huge fan of villains but Mads Mikkelsen makes this one pretty tough to dislike. First of all, he’s pretty easy to look at and second of all, he has a voice and accent that I could listen to all day long. Top that off with some killer make-up for his character Kaecilius in Doctor Strange and I have to say, I’m officially a fan of this villain and I think movie goers will be too!
Did I mention that Mads Mikkelsen is super charming and really, as excited as a kid might be about his role in this film. Upon walking into the room the very first thing that he told us was that he would definitely be collecting the character action figures!
I’ve been waiting 51 years for that. So I think yes.
When asked if he prefers villains or heroes, his answer was spot on:
I’ll take the villain. I mean, in terms of playing characters, I think that any good hero, or any good villain has to be interesting, having both sides of the coin. And I think that’s exactly what Marvel always does, right?
Favorite scene to shoot?
There were quite a few scenes that I loved shooting, but the great encounter I have with Benedict, which starts out with a long fight, and ends up with me making the speech. That makes a lot of sense, he’s onto something. He has a point. I thought that was a brilliant sequence to do.
When was the first time you saw yourself in makeup, costume, everything?
It was fantastic. I mean, we went to do some of the tests and we were doing the makeup, and I asked could I bring the costume and have it on when we do the makeup, just to see how it looks together and they were spot on.We were sitting in there for hours trying out this makeup, and I was like, “Oh god, do I really wanna do this every day?” but then it turned out so fantastic, I was like, “Yeah, that’s it. Three hours every day, we’ll do it. It’s worth it, really.”
You just close your eyes and go through the scenes you’re gonna do that day. It’s a transformation into preparing and if you’re not doing it in the makeup chair, you’ll do it in your own trailer. So, I did it in the makeup chair.
How does it feel to not only have your name cemented in Marvel universe, but also the Star Wars Universe?
It seems appropriate.
No, it feels fantastic. I mean as a young dane who started out acting 20 years ago back home, I never imagined that I would work in America at all, even less that I would work in a Marvel film. So, it feels as if I’m a very fortunate person.
What did you do when you found out that you got the role?
I called my agent. I said, “This is basically what I did as a kid when I was 14 years old.”I was running around doing what this character is doing. I was like, “So I think we should say yes.” Yeah.
Did you find anything extremely challenging when you were on set, just the logistics of everything?
Yes, the logistics obviously. You’ve seen the film, you know that it’s upside-down and mirrored. We might be hanging upside down on, on, on the, on the ceiling, and so it’s like, “Wow, where’s Strange now? Is he on the left side or the right side? Am I hiding that way or that way?” And we constantly had to go and and see the little videos they have of what we’re doing, with animated characters and go, “Okay, so he’s there, and he’s, okay, so that means he’s up there.” So, it was very tricky to get that right.
Did you keep anything from the set?
I did. I, I always, I always keep something. Yes there is, but I can’t tell you because they’d want it back.
Another thing that I’d like to mention about Mads Mikkelsen is that he’s wildly funny and has a wicked sense of humor. I remember seeing a YouTube clip mash up of Mads Mikkelsen crack ups which includes a funny interview clip with Mads and Ben Mendelsohn, the famous Mads Mikkelsen I wanna thank my mom and dad video clip, and he even does some dancing! See the Mads Mikkelsen I wanna Thank My Mom and other vides.
Overall, Actor Mads Mikkelsen is a pretty entertaining guy, and it’s tough not to like him – even when he’s playing a bad guy!
I can’t wait for you all to see this film and enjoy Mads Mikkelsen in his performance as Kaecilius, and in the meantime, here’s a sneak peek:
