I’ve always been pretty crafty but having a tween daughter around has really forced me to up my craft game. She’s so creative and always pushing me to my craft limits, especially around the holidays.

We’ve been sharing quite a few of our DIY craft projects lately and this Valentine’s Day Craft one is so fun! Just a little heart plush in a matchbox is so simple but such a sweet way to say, “I love you” this Valentine’s Day! Even better, you probably already have everything that you need to make this fun craft project!

Valentine’s Day Craft: Heart Plush in a Matchbox

List of Supplies:

1. Felt fabric
2. Needle and thread
3. Pencil
4. Scissors
5. Matchbox
6. Craft glue
7. Colored craft papers
8. Confetti or any kind of craft decor

How to make a Heart Plush in a Matchbox

Step ONE:

Cut a small heart shape from red colored craft paper. Cut out a thick arrow shape (shown above) from a white craft paper.

Step TWO:

Fold the square part of the arrow shape cut out into half, keeping the triangular part intact.

Step THREE:

Now fold the triangular part towards the square part. This will form a mini envelope pattern. Glue the heart cut out on the envelope to close. Keep in mind that the size of the envelope should be smaller than the matchbox. If you want, you can write a cute tiny note inside the tiny envelope before you seal it shut. 

Covering The Matchbox

Step FOUR:

Cover the outer part of the matchbox with colored craft paper. You can also cover the inner bottom surface of the inner part of the matchbox, with craft paper.

Step FIVE:

Glue the mini envelope (created in previous steps) on any one of the big flat sides of the matchbox. Use a black gel pen to write a message or quote on the matchbox. Draw any design you want. I went with swirly dash lines from the quote towards the envelope.

Making the Plush Heart

Step SIX:

Cut out 2 same sized heart shapes from felt fabric. The size of the heart should be smaller than the matchbox, as it should fit inside the matchbox.

Step SEVEN:

Prepare needle and thread. Place both heart cut outs together, making sure to match the sides of both heart cut outs.

Step EIGHT:

Do simple running stitch around the sides to join both heart cut outs. Keep a small opening for stuffing the felt heart. Use scrap felt fabrics to stuff the felt heart. Insert the scrap felts through the small opening to stuff the heart.

Step NINE:

Now that you are done stuffing the heart, close the open end to secure the stuffing. Tie knots and cut off extra thread.

Step TEN:

I used round sequins to decorate the small heart plush with craft glue. Allow the glue to dry entirely.

The Finished Product

Step ELEVEN:

Place the heart inside the inner part of the match box and cover it with the outer part. You can also put a tiny letter or tiny piece of candy inside the matchbox with the heart plush. It would also be really cute to sign your name, or write “I love you” inside the little box. Get creative! Remember, this is a gift from your heart!
