Lemon Butter Sauce Recipe
Sweet Lemon Butter can be a delicious, unexpected condiment on your table. This lemon butter recipe makes a great topping for muffins, breads, or even ice cream!
Lemon Butter
We started making this Sweet Lemon Butter a few years ago after a friend shared this recipe with me, and I can’t tell you how often my hubby reminds me to make it.
It works for so many things and adds just the right touch to any warm bread and my hubby is especially fond of it on dessert!
Sweet Lemon Butter Recipe
One of my favorite things about this yummy lemon butter sauce recipe is that it uses fresh lemon juice and simple ingredients to create the best lemon butter sauce that we’ve tried. Wonderful on bread, white fish, lemon chicken (yum!) or serve it with fresh dill (or other fresh herbs) on salmon – lemon butter salmon is one of our favorites!
This really is the best sauce and there are so many wonderful ways to enjoy it.
Ingredients for making homemade lemon butter sauce:
- Sugar
- Cornstarch (potato starch will work as well)
- Water
- Fresh Lemon Juice
- Butter
In a small saucepan on the stovetop, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, water, and lemon juice until the mixture is not lumpy. Cook over low heat and slowly raise heat to medium heat and stir occasionally until the mixture begins to thicken. Stir constantly once the mixture is thickening. Remove from heat when the sauce is a smooth consistency.
Remove from heat when the sauce is the consistency you desire.
Next, add in the butter and stir as you melt butter and continue stirring until your lemon-butter sauce is smooth and all of the melted butter is mixed in. Let the lemony sauce cool and it will begin to thicken a bit and make more of a creamy sauce.
I like to store this lemony butter sauce in a glass airtight container in the fridge. It can sit out at room temperature while serving but I like to keep it refrigerated when not in use.
This Sweet Lemon Butter Sauce is the perfect sauce a for gift giving and would make a nice gift item to give bottled up during the holidays or for special occasions.
I love finding special homemade things like this that we can make and share during the holidays. You might consider making this along with a loaf of homemade bread to share with neighbors and friends.
Variations of Lemon Butter Sauce
The best thing about this lemon sauce is that you can change it up if you like! We’ve added garlic before to make it more of a lemon garlic butter sauce, which is a completely different flavor but fantastic for fish fillets or chicken breast recipes. There are so many different ways to enjoy this wonderful homemade sauce so feel free to experiment and see what your family likes best!

Yummy! Thanks so much for sharing. It looks great, and I’m always looking for ways to use my fresh lemons, since it’s so much cheaper to buy them by the bag, rather than individually. I hope to try this soon!
Yum! This looks delicious– and versatile!
