Make your LEGO party extra fun with these easy LEGO cupcakes!

Easy Lego Cupcakes

You could even have the kids make their own Lego cupcakes if you wanted to include this as part of the fun Lego party activities!

I love making themed birthday cakes and cupcakes, and my son will still say that his lego themed party was one of his favorites. But here’s the kicker – cute cupcakes like these don’t have to be difficult, in fact – they can be an easy way to follow your party theme, not break the bank and still make the perfect cupcakes. That’s a mom win in my book!

Ingredients for lego Cupcakes

So your child tells you that they want a Lego movie or Lego themed birthday party/ No problem! We think it’s a great idea!

Just pick out their favorite lego colors or popular color choices that will match with party decor. I’d suggestion going with 2-4 of the primary colors. Then grab a separate bowl for each of your different frosting colors and let the Lego birthday party creating begin!

To make a dozen cupcakes, here is what you will need:

Ingredients for making cupcakes

  • 1 C. sugar
  • 1/2 C. butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 C. flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 C. milk

*optional: If you are in a pinch you can of course use your favorite cupcake boxed mix, white cake mix or even buy pre-made cupcakes at the store.

What you’ll need to decorate LEGO Cupcakes

  • Pillsbury Funfetti blue and yellow frosting (they also make red and orange!)
*or you can use white frosting and use yellow food coloring, red food coloring, etc.
  • Peanut Butter M&M’s to match the colors of the cupcakes you are making (red M&Ms for the red frosting ones, etc.
*you can also use plain or Peanut M&Ms

*if you decide to make cupcakes from a box mix, consider using Pillsbury Funfetti cake mix, as it would be really cute with these LEGO cupcakes!

How to make LEGO cupcakes

Preheat the oven to 350 degree and line a 12 count muffin tin with cupcake liners (optional) .

Use an electric mixer to combine the cupcake ingredients, mixing well. Fill each cupcake tin about 3/4 full.

Bake for 20-23 minutes.

Making Lego Cupcakes
Let the cupcakes cool completely prior to frosting.

Once the cupcakes have cooled generously frost the top of the cupcake with yellow or blue frosting (see photo).

Frosting Lego Cupcakes

Give each 4 coordinating M&M’s (see photo).

Repeat until all the cupcakes are decorated to resemble Legos. If you have a young Lego fan, they might enjoy helping you put these Lego cupcakes together.

This activity could also be used as a fun color recognition exercise. Have them select frosting colors and then match them to candy colors (maybe even start with colorful candy cups to separate the colors) … you can really get as creative as you like and that’s what I love about fun activities like this!

Any time that I can find a way to include some educational aspect into an activity with the kids, it’s a win!

And this one is a double win because it includes dessert and chocolate!

LEGO Birthday Ideas

One thing that I love about fun birthday party ideas like this is that not only are they a fun addition to your LEGO themed birthday party but they also serve as a fun decoration and look amazing on your LEGO party table as part of the party celebration!

Not only is this a fun idea for cupcakes, but you could also turn this same idea into LEGO birthday cake if you are looking for other LEGO cake ideas. For a LEGO cake, you could pre-slice the pieces of a sheet cake and then make each rectangle piece a LEGO cake slice by adding 4 M&Ms to each slice.

If you have enough kids at your party, you could assign each kid a LEGO color or put them in LEGO color groups. Group activities could center around the “color” that they are assigned and could include them gathering in their right color group to decorate their Lego cupcakes.

With a LEGO themed birthday party, there will be no shortage of LEGO party favors and ideas! You can find some fun Lego silicone molds on Amazon that are really fun for making chocolate Lego molds that could be used on cupcakes or on a Lego birthday cake or even just as additional party favors.

This is a fun party dessert option that can be thrown together quickly. If you are in a pinch, purchase ready made cupcakes!

You can also make these fun cupcakes using sheet cakes! Make a LEGO cake by turning a large rectangle sheet cake into smaller rectangle lego pieces.

As mentioned above, you can also turn these cupcakes into an activity for kids. Give the kids plain frosted cupcakes and add the M&M candies to a small bowl for each child. Have them decorate their own lego cupcake!

If you don’t want to use cupcakes or cake, you could also do this same thing with rice krispies treats – just frost the top of the squares and then add M&M candy.

*Makes approximately 12 cupcakes.
