Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time: Costume Designer Paco Delgado Interview

Disclosure: This event and trip to LA was an all expense paid journey sponsored by Disney. All thoughts, opinions and experiences are 100% my own!

If you’ve already seen A Wrinkle in Time then you know how amazing the costumes are!! Truly breathtaking and well thought out. I was so excited to get the chance to chat with Costume Designer Paco Delgado about the process of creating the wardrobes for these characters. This man is truly passionate about his design work and I can tell you for certain that he put his heart and soul into these creations.

He shared with us what went into making the perfect costume for each character and how each look was based on the qualities of their characters.

Oprah’s character has to be energy. She’s a warrior. And Mindy, her’s is very playful, she speaks with quotes from books. Then I thought, well, you know, this lady is a super… librarian of the universe.

And they are stunning!! Here are a few photos that I took during the press junket for the film.

I am absolutely in love with the word dress that Mindy Kaling wore, isn’t it stunning? I love that he called her the Librarian of the Universe. So fitting then, that her dress was full of words and quotes. It’s my favorite:

Delgado shared with us how exciting, and stressful at times, it was working on these fantastic costumes. He mentioned how it felt like a race against the clock to get these dresses just perfect.

This is a race to the future always. You have a deadline you have to produce these costumes. You have to make drawings. You have to put them in motion. You have to find a workshop to make them. You have to make a fitting. You have to put them in front of the camera to test them. And one day they have to be in the movie. And, you know, the thing is, you have to… you have to calm yourself. And then I always think this: I always think, well, they are gonna hate it.That’s it. And then once I think they’re gonna hate it, I feel so much relief, because I think the only thing that can happen is to get better.

I loved his humor and perspective. He was full of laughter when sharing his stories, including the fact that many of their original ideas didn’t work and had to be refigured but things all came together in the end. I am so impressed with not only this man, but the beautiful looks that he created that will live on forever in these characters. SO much thought from everything to fabric type to the origin of designs and the meaning behind certain symbols. These are the things that all help to bring characters and story lines together smoothly and I would have to say that Delgado did a stunning job for his role as costumer designer on this film. Added bonus, he’s a very entertaining and warm person, I really enjoyed this interview. I wish I had audio to share with you as he also has the most lovely accent and hearing him tell stories of how these costumes came to be was fascinating and magical.
