My review of Disney's The Nutcracker

Interview with Mackenzie Foy (Clara) from Disney’s THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS!

Disclosure: This event and trip to LA was an all expense paid journey sponsored by Disney. All thoughts, opinions and experiences are 100% my own!

I’ve been sharing with you my coverage from the World Premiere and Red Carpet event for THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS. As you can image, it was all things Disney magic and a true celebration of this film. One of my favorite things about this film is the part of Clara played by Mackenzie Foy who is not only absolutely darling, but very well spoken, poised and wise beyond her years. I had the chance to participate in a sit down interview with you and put this young lady on your list of stars to watch, she’s definitely a talent that we will see great things from in the future, I’m sure.

Mackenzie Foy as Clara

In this film, she does such a wonderful job portraying Clara. A character that is dear to so many, Clara represents young women finding themselves. Believing in themselves and following their dreams. I loved Mackenzie’s response when asked what she hopes that young girls will take from this film:

I hope they see this film, and I hope they see that Clara is unapologetically herself- that even though she’s this young inventor in her time period, it wasn’t really socially acceptable, but she still maintained, this is who I am. This is what I love to do, and I’m gonna do it, and I hope they see that and know you can do that. You can be interested in science, you can be in interested in mechanics, and you can still wear dresses and like those kinds of things.

Clara in Disney's The Nutcracker

Speaking of dresses, she spoke a bit to her costumes in the film and shared with us which were her favorites:

I wear quite a few costumes in the film which was really, really fun. They were all handmade- all very, very intricate, which is really amazing. I really love the purple party dress because that one has a bustle- and it’s really fun. Actually I have a couple bustles in the film. I have a proper cage and then I have a bum pad, and it looked half of her and me which was really cute. It was very beautiful. There’s a lot of detail that went into the costume design, from the tights, to the shoes, to the many skirt layers, and the bodices, and the corset. So I have a very high respect for all of the costumes, and also they have kind of a different character to them, and they kind of go with Clara’s evolution, which I really like.

Clara from Nutcracker

I would agree with her in that the costume design in this film was amazing!

Every character, no matter how big or small has its own challenges because they’re all unique, and you have to do the research in order to properly create them. But I would say with Clara, and her being a main role, there was definitely a story to follow, so I have to make sure that everything is in line. I have to make sure the past is in my head, and I have to make sure I know where she’s going- the emotional complexity; all of those things. So with the bigger part, you have to go more in detail to all those things, especially how they relate to every single character in the film.

Morgan Freeman in the Nutcracker

And of course, one of her costars is the amazing Morgan Freeman, which only added to the magic of this film in my opinion. It sounds like none of that was lost on Mackenzie:

He’s a really nice guy. He’s very joyous and has a very fun sense of humor, so it was really fun just getting to know him and getting to talk to him, and seeing what he was like.

I love her in this film and I so look forward to watching this young star throughout her career. She stole my heart a little when she said that her two favorite Disney movies are Cinderella and Atlantis and that she would enjoy spending her birthday in a bookstore. Such a beautiful young lady, inside and out and I think you will really enjoy her role as Clara in this film!

Nutcracker Characters

Who should see this film?

I think that this movie is perfect for the entire family. There are a few parts that might be scary to young viewers but for the most part, a very clean and solid family film that I think will become a holiday favorite for years to come. If you have concerns in regards to the age of young children, I would say that this film is less scary than the life-action version of Maleficent and along the same lines as the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast.

The messaging in this movie is so strong, including themes about friendship, loyalty, family, courage and most of all … believing in yourself. For more information, please be sure to check out my review of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms!
