Birthday Party Adventures: Ladybug Cake

I love birthdays and I love creating fun and unique birthday party ideas for my kids! We celebrated my daughter’s 1st birthday in a BIG way with some fun birthday party adventures and this Ladybug cake was a HUGE hit!

Best of all, it’s super easy to make!

Let me tell you my first rule of thumb for keeping the birthday parties simple. If you don’t love baking from scratch (which I don’t think that I do…?) then save yourself the stress and trouble and make a box cake. That way, you can have fun decorating it and not stress over the baking part. The cake decorating is the funnest part anyway, right?

Ingredients

Box Cake Mix
White Cake Frosting
Food Coloring
Junior Mints
Red Licorice laces
Pink Glitter Sugar

Mix your cake mix per the box directions. Pour 3/4 of your batter into a sprayed pyrex bowl and that is going to give you your ladybug shape. Pour the remainder into a circle shaped cake pan.

Bake them per the cake mix instructions, checking often for doneness. Once cakes is done, let it cool. Gently remove the cake from bowl by turning upside down and letting it fall out. Also remove the circle cake from the cake pan. Let it finish cooling.

Lay the dome shaped cake and cut just about 1-2″ off. Cut the circle cake in 1/2. Slide it up next to the dome shaped cake. Now you have your ladybug shape, ready for decorating.

Divide white frosting into three separate bowls. Add food coloring to the frosting to make red, pink and green food coloring. Decorate cake as shown. Add Junior Mints for spots and eyes and use a butter knife to create a line to show the ladybug wings and head.

I mixed both my light and dark colors to make a medium pink for the rosy cheeks. Add the licorice laces for antennae and smile.

Sprinkle with pink glitter sugar and now you have the cutest little ladybug cake ever!

As you can see, I also made matching little flower cupcakes to go with the cake, they turned out so cute, and were so easy!
