How to Make Fruit Filled Heart Shaped Hand Pies

  1. Heat oven to 375°F. Line your cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. If using store bought pie crust, unroll the pie crust. Roll Flat.
  3. On a work surface, use a heart cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes. We prefer a 4″ or 6″ cookie cutter.
  4. Next, use a tiny heart cookie cutter to cut out a heart on the top of 1/2 of the large hearts.
  5. Arrange the hearts without cutouts on your prepared baking sheet.
  6. Add 1 tablespoon of strawberry filling to the the middle of each of the heart shaped pastries.
  7. Cover each of the bottom hearts with the remaining hearts (these should all have a tiny heart cut out on them) Use your fingers to seal the edges. Next use the tines of a fork on top of the pies to press down the edges all the way around the edge of the dough of each heart mini pies.
  8. In a small bowl, beat one egg. Add one teaspoon water and beat again. Using a pastry brush, brush your egg wash over the top of each puff pastry heart and then sprinkle the tops of each hand pie with sugar. (optional)
  9. Bake for 15 minutes (or until the top of each hand pie is golden brown)

Let them cool before serving. If you are serving them later, store them in an airtight container – I like to store these little strawberry hand pies in the fridge. These mini hand pies will reheat easily in the microwave the next day.

Recipe notes:

If gifting these mini hand pies for Valentine’s Day, you might consider using a cute twine to tie strings around them. You can do this before or after you wrap them in plastic wrap. I have also used cute clear Valentine’s Day bags to gift these.

You can use whatever filling that you like – we’ve also made apple hand pies, blueberry hand pies, etc. The key is to use a flaky pie crust and fill with whatever filling that you like best.

One of my favorite things about these easy strawberry hand pies is that they look so fancy, but they are really a great way to make the perfect dessert for Valentine’s Day. They would also make a great school snack to tuck in a lunchbox and they are the perfect size for gift giving.
