The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot Review (a GREAT summer read for kids!)

We are always on the lookout for new books, so I wanted to share The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot by Josh Gottsegen.
Rockford T. Honeypot is a character that kids will love – and he’s also one that they will be able to relate to. Rockford takes readers on a journey like no other and teaches some pretty incredible lessons at the same time.
Who is this book made for? Honestly – anyone who loves to read (and I always enjoy reading the books that my kids are reading) but if you are looking for age specifics:
- Age Range: 8 – 12 years
- Grade Level: 3 – 6
My daughter has finished this book and I’m about 1/2 way through, and I’m loving not only the journey that Rockford T. Honeypot is on, but the messaging that he brings.
Never giving up is such a huge message, especially in our world today – and Rockford is all about pressing on and through. We will all face loss, failure and disappointment, but overcoming those things is not only important but it’s vital to finding success and happiness in life.
About The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot
As a young chipmunk, shy, bookish Rockford T. Honeypot had dreams of thrilling adventures across the forest. However, timid of danger and germs, his only adventures were found in books and his imagination. When his family abandons him after a mistake that destroys their hazelnut business, Rockford sets off on a legendary journey beyond his wildest dreams. From exploring cuisines with a famous chef, training with ancient warrior monks, flying on giant hawks, finding true love, and much more, Rockford recounts his epic origin story of hardship, perseverance, and fortune.
About the Author Josh Gottsegen
Los Angeles native Josh Gottsegen has a background in filmmaking and digital media and is the author of “Joosh’s Juice Bar,” an early elementary school children’s book series that encourages healthy eating habits through vivid illustrations and Dr. Seussian-style rhymes. Earning his BA in Film Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara, Gottsegen has won numerous awards for his short films and video productions. Starting professionally at NBCUniversal Interactive, later Josh Gottsegen moved into editing as well as other creative projects for the Walt Disney Company, Fox Corporation, IMG, and the NFL.
Our Review of The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot
One of the reasons that we love to read is because reading takes us out of our element and lets us explore the world as other might see it. My daughter (13) was excited about this book because not only does she love animals, but she has always enjoyed books that share adventure through the eyes of a character, especially when that character is an animal.
Here is my daughter’s personal review of The Adventures Rockford T. Honeypot by Josh Gottsegen:
I really enjoyed reading this book. Rockford is a fun character and he goes through a lot of the same adventures and challenges that many people will go through. He is brave, even while he is afraid – and he always focuses on the things that matter to get him through. I love the way he shares his adventures and the other characters that he meets along the way.
He shows us that it’s ok to step out of your comfort zone and that you will even be better because of it. Don’t quit because these things will make your stronger and better and that things you believe in are always worth going after.
I really hope there are more books in this series and I definitely think this needs to be turned into a movie!

Oh yay! Yes, my daughter loved those books too – The Nocturnals, I remember those! I think story telling from an animal perspective is always a great way to get kids wrapped up in a story. I know they are going to love this book, I can’t wait to hear what you all think! ~ Keri Lyn
