Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark on Blu-ray NOW + Giveaway!

Warning: GROSS content ahead. We’ve partnered with Lionsgate in celebration of the fact that the highly anticipated Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark film adaptation of the iconic book series is available on Blu-ray now!

Have I mentioned that I’m going out of my way these days to stay connected to my teens?

As this series is wildly popular with teenagers, this would be the perfect Halloween movie for teens or any teen gatherings you might be hosting.

When my kids were younger and in elementary school they always talked about these books in the library. Apparently the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books were so “scary” that you had to have your parents permission to check them out if you were under age 13. They were fascinated by them, but also too freaked out to ever check them out.

However, they knew all the stories. Braver kids (or parents) had shared the stores and eventually I think both of my kids ended up reading them at some point, SO when the movie hit theaters earlier this year, my kids talked me into going to a midnight showing.

I CAN.NOT. believe that we went. I mean, I hate scary movies. I decided to go because the book had been such a funny part of their elementary and middle school years and it was rated PG-13 so surely I could handle it.

Or could I? I’m such a big chicken, lol! I watched much of the movie through my fingers, but I have to say … it’s wildly creative and very well done. It’s scary but also has that silly scary twist to it that makes it super entertaining. It was also the perfect level of scary for a big wimp like myself and I can see where this type of “scary movie” would be a hit with kids this age. And honestly, SO much better than the scary movies that were out when I was a kid. (and maybe those movies are the reason I’m such a big chicken now, lol!)

What Age is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark Appropriate For?

I would say of course that it depends on the kid, but I would say 13 and up to be safe. It’s a very “clean” scary and really just kind of like those old ghost stories that we used to tell around the campfire. There are some fun relationships in the stories and it’s definitely entertaining but if you have a child that is super sensitive, these probably aren’t the books or movie for that child.

I really enjoyed sharing this movie experience with my kids and it’s been fun to talk about and I would definitely prefer this over violence and bad language. While this has some scary moments, it’s all pretty safe and in good fun.

What is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark About?

It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley, where for generations the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time. For a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home, the stories become all too real in this spine-tingling film.

Definitely watch the video above for details but here are the step by step instructions:

On clean skin, use liquid latex to create your base. Use tissue paper layered in the liquid latex to build up your blemish or wound. Keep repeating this until your blemish is the desired size.

Using a makeup sponge dab red costume makeup to the outside and edges of the wound. Add yellow to the inside and the blend it all together with white to give it a finished look.

Next, using a q-tip, dab the wound with water to give it that extra oozy moist infection look. Very important step.

If you are re-creating the scene from “The Red Spot” in the movie where the spiders crawl out of the blemish on her face, then you’ll want to cut the leg off of a plastic spider. Using the Spirit Gum, glue the leg right into the middle of the wound.

And there you go! You now have a very gross but perfectly creepy spider bite blemish!
