The Littlest Bigfoot Series Book Review + Positive Messaging for Young Girls

I’m a true believer in the power of positive thinking. This is especially true when it comes to raising my daughter to be strong, confident and convicted in her beliefs. We love to read together and I always look forward to the different journeys that books can take us on. We recently started reading this fun series by Jennifer Weiner and I’m really enjoying the messaging in these books and so wish they had been around when I was a young girl.

This series has really made me reflect on the different things that I can do to keep positive messaging in front of her. I want her to realize the power of her thoughts and words and not only how they effect others but also how they effect her journey into becoming the very best version of the person that she wants to be. So much of that comes from focusing on the things in life that support, encourage and uplift us.

After chatting with my daughter about this topic, I asked her to take some time to create a drawing to share with me what makes her happy and the end result was so much more simple than I had expected. The best things in life are free. I love that most of these things come from our family, friends and from within ourselves:

Growing up is hard! We’ve all been there and it just isn’t easy. One of the ways that I best stay connected with my daughter is to make sure that we are having conversations and sharing interests that keep those lines of communication open. I try to surround her with as much positive messaging as I can. I literally wrap her up in it. From the messaging on her clothing, the pillows on her bed, the art on the walls of our home, her notebooks, notes from me, the shows she watches and the books we read.

After reading with her last night, I took a peek around her room and realized just how powerful all of this messaging is and how she has actually made a habit out of sprinkling her little inspirational messages all over the place. I loved reading her lasted white board entry. (above)

As you can see, we talk about messaging a lot. The messages that we send others and the messages that we send ourselves. I think that as a mother, I’m most drawn to books like these because of the intentional themes of self-love, positive body image, and friendship between girls. I really enjoy the conversations that come from these book journeys and the fact that they promote healthy and positive thoughts about young girls and their own power in our world.

About these books

The main character in The Littlest Bigfoot series is a 12 year old named Alice. My daughter is 10, so the connection was instantly made and this book has all the right things to suck us right in, including the fact that my daughter instantly fell in love with the character Millie, who is a part of the Bigfoot tribe and more importantly, Millie has a huge desire to be a singing sensation. And so the adventure begins and let me tell you, this book has all of the things that young girls love: adventure, best friends, so much imagination and a few unexpected twists.

But Millie is a Bigfoot, part of a clan who dwells deep in the woods. Most Bigfoots believe that people—NoFurs, as they call them—are dangerous, yet Millie is fascinated with the No-Fur world. She is convinced that humans will appreciate all the things about her that her Bigfoot tribe does not: her fearless nature, her lovely singing voice, and her desire to be a star.

Alice swears to protect Millie’s secret. But a league of Bigfoot hunters is on their trail, led by a lonely kid…

Twelve-year-old Alice Mayfair has a secret. She’s not human. But who—or what—is she? While Alice goes in search of her past, her best friend Millie Maximus, a tiny Bigfoot with a big voice, prepares for her future. Together they plan to sneak off to New York Citywhere Millie hopes to audition for The Next Stage, the TV show she’s sure will rocket her to stardom and free her from the suffocating expectations of her tribe.

Meanwhile Jeremy Bigelow’s Bigfoot research has put him on the radar of a shadowy government organization led by a mysterious man named Trip Carruthers. The Bigfoots have something, a chemical so powerful and dangerous that the government will do anything to obtain it. And Jeremy is tasked with securing it once and for all.

In an unexpected twist of fate, Jeremy, Alice, and Millie find themselves facing off at a crossroads. But in order to determine where they’re going, they have to first figure out where they come from—and draw the line between what is good, what is evil, and what it means to be a hero.
