Quick Beer Bread Recipe

So many times I have found myself having everything for a meal except for the bread, ack! And then I’d find myself scrambling for ingredients as I used to think you needed yeast (which I never have on hand) to make bread.

Can you make bread without yeast?

YES!! I turns out you CAN make bread without yeast. If you have a beer. Because guess what, beer has yeast. And best of all, this is such an easy recipe, and I love easy recipes! Especially ones that never disappoint, and this one always turns out just perfect.

Does it matter what type of beer you use to make beer bread?

It doesn’t even really matter what type of beer, I have found that most brands work great and it’s kind of fun to try a new bottle of beer to see what the outcome might be. Darker beer of course will give you a totally different homemade beer bread outcome then a bud light. I highly recommend using something normal for your first time making this bread (I really like to use Original Coors Gold Can Beer or Modelo) those are probably my two favorites and will make the most basic beer bread. A light beer (Coors Light, Bud Light, Miller Lite) seems to make the beer bread a little fluffier, but nothing too noticeable.

If you want to get really fancy, try an IPA Beer, a Craft Beer or a Pale Ale – but be warned, that kind of beer doesn’t always turn out the best. It is fun to test out different kinds though, so have fun with it – try YOUR favorite beer! I have tried a pumpkin beer version in the fall, and it was festive but definitely not something we would make all year long.

We usually have beer in the fridge, but at times when we haven’t, I’ve actually called a neighbor to borrow a beer, which caused a few chuckles for sure! And because I make this bread so often, we always joke about that lone beer in the fridge that needs to be saved for my quick beer bread recipe.

Ingredients for making quick Beer Bread

  • Self-rising flour (all purpose flour or whole wheat flour works too)
  • Sugar
  • Beer
  • Melted butter

Directions for making quick Beer Bread

  1. Spray a loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray and preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Combine the flour and sugar in a large mixing bowl with a wooden spoon. Stir beer in over the top. The batter will be very thick. Pour the dough into your greased loaf pan.
  3. Pour the 4 tablespoons of melted butter over the top of the bread.
  4. Bake for 35-40 minutes. Look for the top to start turning golden brown. Insert a toothpick around 35 minutes – if it comes out clean, it is done.

*it’s a nice buttery crust, so you don’t want to overdo it.

Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack.

I think that you will really enjoy this recipe – as far as quick bread recipes I go, it’s the best that I’ve found. A few dry ingredients and a beer – it’s pretty hard to beat that in terms of an easy beer bread recipe, right? It’s a great one to keep on hand in the event that you need it, and you will be surprised at how easy it really is to make!

Additional notes on making homemade beer bread:

This is a bit of a buttery beer bread, but that’s super easy to adjust by cutting back on the melted butter that you pour on top of the batter. I think I’ve gotten the amount of butter just right – but cut back a little if it’s too much butter for your liking.

People are always surprised that this beer bread doesn’t have a strong beer flavor, and the flavor will be even less if you use lighter beer. But again, if you love a strong beer flavor in your bread, use a stronger beer.

I’ve made this bread with both regular flour and self rising flour and that doesn’t seem to make too much of a difference. The version with self-rising flour might be a little fuller, but they both bake a very hearty bread and the cooking process is still the same.

These are all things that comes down to personal preferences and as you make this fresh bread recipe over and over, you’ll start modify the recipe to your liking. It really is the easiest bread to make!

How to Store Homemade Bread

I like to store bread in an airtight container or in aluminum foil in the bread box – but you can also wrap it in plastic wrap. This bread does just fine stored at room temperature (but heat it up for the best flavor when serving!)

Give Homemade Beer Bread as a Gift

Loaves of bread also make wonderful and welcome gifts, so this is a great recipe for gifting as well! I’m a huge fan of giving bread bowls, platters or cutting boards as gifts, and this is a fun way to do that.

Pair it with my special Easy Garlic Dip recipe and you’ve got a great simple appetizer!

*If gifting a loaf of bread and the seasoning mix: add 2-4 tablespoons of mix into a clear plastic bag and write the needed ingredients to make the dip, on the tag.

  1. I just made this with the last bottle of Guinness from St. Patty’s Day. I kicked it up a notch by using leftover bacon grease instead of butter on the top. OMG it came out wonderful. The Guinness did make it dark in color and maybe a tad on the bitter side. Slathering it in butter took care of the bitterness and made it perfect! Great recipe. Thank you!!

  2. I’d also like to know if you can use all purpose flour in this recipe instead of the self rising?

  3. Hi! I’d like to try to make this gluten free but don’t want to waste the flour. I’d use Bob’s red Mill and was curious if any of your followers have tried it? It’s a 1 to 1 ratio. Thanks!

  4. HI Nancy, yes it can! We’ve made it with all kinds, the results are just a little different each time, but it still works great!

  5. So-so. Was too sweet for “bread”. Actually it would be good as shortcake with strawberries now that I think of it. For “bread” I’ll cut back the sugar and add just a little salt. It is easy though, I’ll give you that.

  6. I love beer bread! Instead of making biscuits I cut the sugar back on the beer bread. Ivan slice bread in 1” slices and puor sausage gravy over it. Yummy! Instant breakfast.

  7. sheryl sutton-sigler , Yes, it can be made in a Dutch oven. There is not a recipe that cannot be made in a Dutch oven. I’ve even made ice cream in a Dutch oven.

  8. Has anyone ever tried making this with hard cider? It is made with yeast so I bet it would work but I wanted to see if anyone else has done it before trying!!

  9. Does this bread recipe make good rolls/baps aswell as a normal loaf? So you can use it for other types of cuisines.

  10. Hi Stu! I haven’t tried it as rolls. It’s a pretty dense bread, and I think could be used for a lot of things – I’ll have to try your roll suggestion!

  11. Made two loaves and they are perfect. Soft inside and crusty outside. Paired with navy bean soup to perfection. Looked just like the picture.
