I love making homemade microwave popcorn for my kiddos.
It’s one of their favorite snacks and I love knowing exactly what ingredients are in it. It takes less than 5 minutes in the microwave and it’s so easy to make and less expensive than buying the microwavable bags at the store. Family movie nights…here we come!
Homemade Popcorn
¼ C. popcorn kernels (we love Bob’s Red Mill white popcorn)
2 tbs. butter (you could also use coconut oil if you wish)
Directions –
#1. Add the ¼ C. of popcorn kernels to a large microwave safe dish. Next, add in the 2 tbs. of butter or coconut oil.
#2. Cover the dish – I typically use a small salad plate. If you don’t cover it popcorn will go everywhere.
#3. Place in the microwave and set the timer to 4 minutes. The first time making this, you will want to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn. My popcorn is usually done between 4-5 minutes in our microwave. Any longer and it will burn.
You will have extra popcorn kernels but I love the half-cracked ones so my for me this was a bonus!
#4. Use pot holders to remove from the microwave as the dishes get HOT, I mean scalding HOT. Sprinkle with salt if you wish and let cool a few minutes before serving. I also transfer it to another bowl as needed for the kiddos.
Enjoy!

I’m not a big fan of the microwave for cooking things. Did you know that in just about the same amount of time, you could put a little coconut oil (or oil of your choice) in a pot (with a lid), then cover the bottom of the pot with popping corn, and just shake the pot as it’s heating up, and in a few minutes, you’ll have real, heat-popped popcorn. It’s amazing. ans what’s nice, is that whatever you want to put on the popcorn, say salt, parmesan cheese, garlic, whatever… will stick a little better because of the oil. That’s how we used to make it before microwaves.
