American Express Prepaid Card: Traveling with a Prepaid Card

I was recently offered the opportunity to try out the American Express Prepaid Card. I was excited for this opportunity because I have been looking for more ways to manage my money when I travel, and I have also had several of you ask my opinion about these prepaid cards, and I had never used one before.

The American Express Prepaid Card is basically a card that acts just like a credit card, but is not associated with your credit, nor does it have any fees attached to it. You load funds on it and use it just like a credit card. I love this idea for traveling because it reduces the need for carrying a bunch of cash, plus this card comes with fraud protection. This means that if your card is lost or stolen, you will not pay for the fraudulent charges and the funds will be replaced. (wow.) The card has a lot of other perks (including roadside assistance, purchase protection (I love this! If an item purchased with your American Express Prepaid card breaks or is stolen… they will repair, replace or reimburse!) and the card also offers Global Assistance .. which means that you have 24 hour custom care day or night.

I am typically a debit card user, but one thing that I recently discovered is that debit cards don’t always give you the protection that you might need. That is where this card is a little different. It acts like a debit card, but has the security and protection of a credit card.

I just received my card today, and have set it up to have funds loaded for an upcoming trip. My plan is to share with you my experience of traveling with a prepaid card. So far, this has been so easy! My prepaid American Express works just like a debit card (I even have a pin number) and I can manage my card anytime right online. Stay tuned… I am excited to share more of my prepaid American Express adventures with you …

Have any of you used a prepaid card for travel? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

  1. I use a capital one secured credit card. I put in money via my current account and use it and return it by the end of the cycle. It has once yearly $25 fee. I used it for travel recently in Canada and liked the idea that it offers the same protection you have mentioned. The most kick I got out of it was the ability to rent a car , I wouldnt have been able to using my debit card!!

  2. Exactly Saida… that is what I am hearing. So many people don’t want to use Credit Cards and yet, debit cards don’t have near the protection or security … this is such a great alternative. So far, I am very happy with this card. Thanks for the input!
