Fundraising

I mentioned yesterday on my facebook page about how I took the day to clean out my pantry. I also mentioned how this is usually a task that totally overwhelms and stresses me. I did get a bit overwhelmed yesterday, however, it was for a different reason than normal. I became overwhelmed at the thought of not having a pantry at all … or a home. or my family. or my life.

Life has a crazy way of slapping us right back to reality… just when we start feeling like we don’t have enough of something. The resent catastrophe in Japan has me feeling downright thankful for just about every little thing. It also has me feeling downright helpless.  There are a few  things that I can do to make me feel less small:

Pray. I know that prayer makes a difference. Pray.Pray. Pray.

Give. Every little drop makes a difference  … and sometimes giving also helps to lift that feeling of helplessness.

The American Red Cross:  You can make a donation on line.  Or, you can simply text REDCROSS to 90999 and instantly donate $10 to the Japanese relief efforts.

The Salvation Army:  You can also donate on-line here as well.  You can also text JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 and make an instant donation.

Heart to Heart International:   Only 2% of all donations are kept to cover overhead.  That means 98% of what you send to them will actually make it to the quake ravaged areas.

Samaritan’s Purse: This is the company that I will be sending my donation to. They have a wonderful  biblical message and low overhead costs.

Count Your Blessings. Sometimes (always) disasters like this can bring us back to see our true blessings. You know, those things that we take for granted. A healthy child. Clean water. A warm bed. Things that we should be so thankful for.

One thing that I am so thankful for are the other bloggers that are in my blogging networks and community. It sounds crazy to say, but the support system from these friends is really what keeps me going, and always amazes me at times like this… there is SO much power in numbers. Several of us have joined together to see what we can do to make a difference. You can visit each of these blogs to see how your comment can raise money for Japan:

For each link/comment left below, SheSaved (moi!) will contribute $0.50 to Samaritan’s Purse: — up to $250. If you have a blog and are doing the same thing – please leave a link to your POST below so that others can join in the efforts to help. If you don’t have a blog, just leave your name in the comments and share your thoughts for the people affected by this tragedy…every comment/link = more money to this cause. Now link up or leave a comment and let’s add a drop to the bucket…

…wow! My friend Chels just emailed me about this awesome fundraiser that Jars of Clay is doing to help the flood victims in their hometown of  Nashville. You can go to the Jars of Clay Website to preview their song FLOOD (You have probably heard it, my favorite is the Original Album Version) …and they are offering a FIVE version song download for only $1.00 in efforts to raise their goal of $100,000 for this cause!! I fell in love with Nashville when I went to Blissdom there in February, and was so sad to hear of the devastating flood. When people come together after disasters like this…beautiful things happen. For $1.00 you get 5 versions of this great song…and you help to make a difference. Awesome! Thanks FantasticFind!

Looking for a way to help with the Haiti relief efforts? …here is a really simple and quick way to “do something” (and I know we all feel helpless!) …just text the word HAITI to 90999 and you will instantly donate $10 to the Red Cross for relief efforts. ( The $10 will be billed to you right on your phone bill.) Click HERE to read more about this.

Another great organization that you might be familiar with is Global Aid Network, the relief arm for Campus Crusade for Christ. . . they have a wonderful program for giving HERE. They have already shipped in relief containers…but have more ready to go as soon as funding for shipping comes in.
Don’t forget about my post HERE about donating items through Ebay’s Giving works program…

…and, I was inspired by MoneySavingMoms efforts to rally the bargain bloggers into action…and so for every 20 comments left on this post through January 21st, 2010, my family will be donating a additional $10 to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief

1) If you are a Blogger….Blog about how you are going to help those that need aid in Haiti. Just discussing diffent options for helping seems to help us all….. Leave a link to your posting.

2) If you are a Reader…Leave a comment sharing your ideas for helping … and don’t forget to visit the other blogs that are participating… you can see them all HERE.

…if you are like me … then you find yourself feeling really helpless when something major like the Haiti disaster happens. You want to do something, but you don’t even know where to start.
Tonight as the 5:00 news came on, my 4 year old son (who never stops) stopped cold as he saw a little girl trapped under some rubble. The look on his face was that of pure and geniune shock. “Why did that happen to that little girl?” he asked me. He was so sincere in asking me…as if bad things couldn’t possibly happen to precious little children. I obviously didn’t have an answer for him. . . I don’t even have one for myself. I knew that nothing I could say could explain to his soft little heart, the sadness that can occur in our sometimes hard world.
So … the answer that I did eventually (ok, it took me like … all night!) come up with was this….
“I don’t know why that happened,
but we can do something to help that little girl” ….
I came up with a little project that my kids and I are going to take on this weekend… we are going to use Ebay Giving Works to sell some toys, clothing and other household items on ebay… through the Ebay Giving Works program. Basically…you list your items just like normal, and then select how much of the proceeds that you would like to give … Donate 10-100% of your final sale price with eBay Giving Works. . . since we have some postage credits from my Stamps.com ventures … I can even pay it forward with the postage … I love it. These items are things that we don’t need… (in fact, getting them out of my house and clearing up some space will be a blessing!) … and the sale of these items (however small) will in some small way, bless someone else. One of my Facebook friends (thanks, Michelle!) posted this quote on Facebook today…and it has stuck with me all day …
No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. ~Aesop
(remember, from The Lion and The Mouse?)
Ol’ Aesop got that one right, eh?

…I wanted to share with those of you that are DOG LOVERS … an awesome fundraiser that I am involved in. ABTR (American Boston Terrier Rescue) is a super neat group of people who help out Boston Terriers in need. And seriously…everyone (thing) needs something protecting it, and these people do an amazing job. (I won’t go into details about the kinds of tragedy that some of these animals can suffer…usually to human ignorance) …but ABTR has the neatest group of VOLUNTEERS that helps them out, gives them a warm home and lots of love…and of course…funding! So… I am currently donating my art services (yes, in my other life I am an artist, http://www.kerilyn.com/ ) and you can read about our litte project HERE.
While we are on the subject, another project that I am involved in is the auction to benefit Benson and Claire click HERE… this is a REALLY easy one to get involved in whether you donate or bid … gosh it will warm your heart just to see all the love:
