Birthday Party Fun: Creating a Unique Party

My daughter recently turned 10 (gah!) so we have been celebrating for about a week over here. I LOVE birthdays and I love to celebrate my kids. For as much as we go “all out”, we really actually keep it pretty simple. The one thing that I love about birthdays is that they are a celebration of the individual and for that reason, they should be just as unique and special. I might have pushed my kids a bit too much in the uniqueness of their birthday requests but I enjoy it so much and it always means that birthdays are never dull around here!

I’ll be sharing with you soon how I created my daughter’s requested Pusheen Fashion Donut Birthday Party (my kids love to challenge me with party themes… this one took the cake, literally!) but today I wanted to give you a quick peek at a few things that I feel made the party extra special, and extra fun.

One of my very favorite things about her party was having a Marquee DIY Light Box all lit up with her name on it when she came down for breakfast on the morning of her birthday. It turns out, it’s probably her favorite “gift” of all! It comes with a huge selection of letters and symbols and then you can also order additional letters and characters (I LOVE the Heidi Swapp collection of inserts (and I’ll include some more down below). I wanted to share this because I think this Marquee DIY Light Box would make such a neat gift for all kids, ages 6 on up… and a wonderful gift idea for those hard to buy for teens and tweens! Best of all, I know that we will be using this for so many birthdays and celebrations for years to come!

Another thing that I love to do to keep birthday gift giving practical, is I love to give home decor items as gifts. This has gotten a lot easier as the kids are getting older, but it serves a double (actually triple) purpose as first of all, it works as a gift. Second of all, it works as party decor. Lastly, they have something fun to hang in their room and use for decor. It’s a lot easier to do this kind of gift giving with my daughter but I just love the You Are My Happy framed print that I ordered from Minted.com.

It added so much to the party decor, and what a wonderful and true message for my little birthday girl! Here are some fun ideas and similar signs that you could use for your next party:

Bringing it all together with Oriental Trading Company

And lastly, I brought this party all together with the help of our friends over at Oriental Trading Company. When your almost 10 year old requests a Pusheen Fashion Donut Birthday Party (don’t even try to make sense of that, you’ll fail… trust me!) then you turn to the party pros at Oriental Trading Company. They have everything. From the pink colors we needed (lots and lots of pink) to some of the cutest party favors you have seen. And, who knew that there were actually donut party favors!? Never fear, there are … and lots of them, at that!

Here’s a peek at how the party came together and a few of our favorite supplies that made that happen:

And I think that one of my very favorite things about this party was the darling fringe skirt around the table:

And, here’s a huge mama tip. If you are going to be setting up any party, have Glue Dots on hand, they save the day! Oriental Trading Company carries those too, and they are a must have for party time!

As you can see, just about any theme is possible when you have great resources. I have to say that after my daughter requested this crazy theme, I thought I would be struggling to pull it together but the folks at Oriental Trading Company made it so easy, they had it all (and more!) at affordable prices and it shipped quick! Donut Games, Donut Hanging Paper Lanters, Donut Pencils with Erasers, Donut Suckers, Plush Donuts and even darling Donut Boxes for party favors!

The party is still set up because we love to drag these celebrations out for as long as we can. Hey. You only turn 10 once, right!? Happy 10th birthday to my girl:

And in case you are left wondering who Pusheen is? Pusheen is a darling little cat character that we happen to be obsessed with right now. Pusheen seems to love pink and donuts (and fashion!) which is how my daughter arrived at her very specific party theme. Here is a peek at some Pusheen merchandise on Amazon:
