Lemon Puppy Chow Recipe

Lemon is a great refreshing flavor for spring and summer and if your family enjoys it they are going to love this special Lemon Puppy Chow Mix recipe I’m sharing with you today, it’s such an easy puppy chow recipe and that lemon flavor gives it a little originality and a fun unique kick!

We’ve heard all kinds of names for these cereal mixture snacks: Chex Mix Muddy Buddies, Chex Mix Muddy Munch, Chex Mix Monkey Munch – whatever you call it – this particular recipe is very much like the classic Puppy Chow snack recipe with a little added lemon bonus! My kids think it should be called Human Chow and actually, I think that’s kind of a fun and catchy name! (and it definitely sounds better than Puppy Chow, lol!)

I love snacks, especially ones that can be set out for guests to enjoy handful by handful and this is a simple recipe that is easy for anyone to make. Be warned though, this one is addicting and they won’t know when to stop! The light and zesty lemon flavor makes this an almost refreshing snack that you just can’t stop eating!

Lemon Puppy Chow Ingredients including chex mix, white chocolate chips, powdered sugar and lemon extract

*RECIPE EDIT* Please Read: Some people have reported having trouble with the chocolate seizing up after the addition of the lemon extract. We have tested and tested this recipe and I haven’t had that issue, but all I can think is that the chocolate isn’t melted enough or that too much of the extract is being added. However, reader Becky shared the following tip with me and it might be a great option if you have had trouble with this one. She says: I melted 6 squares of almond bark then added 1 teaspoon lemon extract and it turned out perfect. Did not add any butter.

I’ll be trying this variation soon and if it works, I’ll update the recipe. Thank you all for your input.

Ingredients for LEMON Puppy Chow recipe

  • 5 Cups Rice Chex OR Corn Chex cereal (General Mills is my go-to but you can use off brand)
  • 2 Cups white chocolate chips
  • 1-2 teaspoons lemon extract
  • 2 Tablespoons butter (unsalted butter works best)
  • 1 1/2 Cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons yellow sugar sprinkles (optional)

How to make Lemon Puppy Chow Mix:

1. Combine your chocolate chips and butter in a microwave-safe bowl

2. Cook on 50% power, for 2-3 minutes, stirring every 20 seconds until melted (not not overcook, as the white chocolate burns quickly).
Melt chocolate slowly so that it doesn’t seize up.
3. Stir in your lemon extract slowly and if your chocolate starts to seize up, return to microwave for another 20 second melt.

Mixing Puppy Chow

4. Pour over your Chex cereal and carefully mix with cereal squares until well coated.

5. Scoop your powdered sugar and sprinkles into a large ziplock plastic bag.

Shaking Puppy Chow Mix

6. Scoop your chocolate coated cereal into your bag of powdered sugar and shake well.

And by shake well, I mean: shake shake shake!

With all ingredients in a large ziploc bag you are going to want to really shake things up (let the kids help – they love this part!)

Serve and enjoy!

This is such a wonderful chocolatey treat for holiday parties – the combination of crispy rice and corn mixed in with the sweet chocolate flavoring makes this one of the best puppy chow recipe treats that we’ve tried.

This is also a fun snack to use as party decor in cute bowl around your event, great for everything from football parties to a birthday party or family gathering. Your guests will have a hard time not grabbing another handful (or two, or three) of this classic snack mix. The best part is that this is a very affordable and delicious snack (watch for stock up sales on corn and rice cereal) and it’s also such a simple recipe that anyone can make it. Such a crowd pleaser, I love easy recipes like this!

This recipe is also one of our favorite treats for family game nights or after school snacks. Sometimes I’ll make a double batch so that we can have extra on hand and my kids love to take this cereal treat in their lunches.

I like to keep little disposable bowls on hand for guest to fill up and believe it or not, sugar ice cream cones are also a great way to hold and serve this lemon puppy chow mix recipe!

  2. I love puppy chow but have never had a lemon version of it. Unique and yummy recipe! Thanks for linking up with Delicious Dishes Recipe Party!

  3. I tried this. And the white chocolate didnt melt right and i tried it 2ce. Once in the microwave and once in a double boiler on low temp. . Was thick and had the consistency of cake frosting. Has anyone else had this issue? So so disappointed because I love lemon!

  4. Oh no Laurie, I’m not sure what could be the problem … maybe a higher setting on the microwave? You could also try to add 1 teaspoon of vegetable shortening or coconut oil to help thin the chocolate but do not add any other type of liquid as the candy will seize and harden. I’m so sorry it’s giving you trouble!

  5. I had the same problem with the thickness of the chocolate
I did use a cheaper version of the chips
It did well until i added the extract
I did add coconut oil and it thinned out but had to add 2 Tablespoons
    But it was very yummy

  6. I melted the white chocolate like I do all my chocolate and it was fine until I added the lemon oil. Then it got thick and crumbly. Had to throw it away. I was so disappointed. Might try again sometime but need to figure out a way to get the lemon flavoring in it.

  7. As soon as I added the lemon extract it turned into a big lump….there was no way to pour it over the cereal.

  8. 4th try I melted 6 squares of almond bark then added 1 teaspoon lemon extract and it turned out perfect. Did not add any butter.

  9. The lemon puppy chow turned out wonderful. I made it work, I melted the chocolate. It turned out perfect. But ….the minute I added the lemon extract it seized up into a hot ball of chocolate. I decided to go for it and put it on the cereal. It was a lump, and I had to mash it together broke the cereal, but it worked. And everyone enjoyed it , so expect to have lumpy chocolate and just mash it together. There’s no soft mixing and chocolate does not pour. I added a little lemon zest very very yummy.
