Mary Poppins Celebrates 50 Years DVD Blu-ray Combo Pack Review #DisneyFrozenEvent
In celebration of it’s 50 years of success as a classic, Disney is releasing the Mary Poppins: 50th Anniversary Edition on December 10th (you can pre-order on Amazon right now for $32.96)
My Mary Poppins memories go back to about 4th grade, which is when I think they showed this Disney classic at my grade school. What I remember most was wishing:
a) that MY toys would pick them selves up and jump in the toy box like the toys in the nursery
b) that a spoonful of sugar sounded really awesome
c) why on earth did those kids (who were about my age at the time that I was watching it) call their room a nursery, lol
Seeing it again as an adult, the magic is all still there, and watching my children watch this movie was such a joy. I loved sharing it with them! Mary Poppins is such a unique film because it has so many messages (and so many that I see now as an adult, that I surely didn’t catch as a child). But what I love most about the film is that it is a message about family and quality time.
Julie Andrews played a fabulous Mary Poppins, and Dick Van Dyke was amazing as Bert the Chimney Sweep, I don’t know of a better combination … these two definitely make magic happen in this film, with the singing and dancing, it’s fantastic. There are so many wonderful parts in this movie, and so many fabulous songs! Another of my all time favorite moments is the laughing scene featuring the song “I Love to Laugh” … my kids were in stitches and I just love the simple joy and happiness that comes out in this film!
When watching Mary Poppins again, after all of these years, the one thing that I really noticed was the relationship between Mary and Mr. Banks and really how they are really calling out his decision to kind of “ignore” his children. I don’t think my kids really picked up on this much, but the journey to him discovering this, is wonderful …and it results in some very special moments including the “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” number, which is heart warming and “lump in your throat” awesome. The end result is a wonderful film reminding us about how important quality time is, and just how far a little magic goes. It’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
