A Big Deal and a Fun Giveaway ….

by Keri Lyn on September 9, 2010

in From My Heart

...the deal that I am going to share with you now… isn’t just a deal…it’s a BIG DEAL … on so many levels.  It is a big deal to us all because it effects  the lives of people that we all know and love…and it is a really big deal to me … because it is effecting the life of someone that I love and care about.

This is the story of my cousin Katie who is fighting breast cancer. She is a 33 year old wife and mother of two little adorable munchkin twins. Can you imagine? I can’t. I think about it all the time… and she is quite possibly, one of the bravest people that I know. You can read more of her story HERE.  (you will also find a Komen Fund Raising link on this page for the Komen for the Cure walk that Katie is fundraising for, where you can donate as little as $5 … in the name of someone that love, have lost, or in the name of Katie…who is in the middle of a fight with this disease.  Just a thought, and I in no way expect this of anyone, but it is a wonderful cause if you are so moved…and even $5 makes a difference.)

Speaking of moved… As you know, I have worked closely with Hanes on several projects …and I am a HUGE fan of their product line. I just happened to mention my cousin Katie’s battle with breast cancer, and within SECONDS, yes SECONDS… I got a “what can we do … and let’s start planning” response from my friends at Hanes. So… I need to tell you first hand, that this isn’t just a company that says that they care about Breast Cancer Awareness  … they DO! They are providing Katie and her Komen for the Cure walking team with TEAM KATIE shirts … over 40 of them.

And… because they care about spreading the word about detection, prevention and cure… they are also providing me with fun Hanes products to share with YOU my readers. All in the name of supporting Katie, and this cause, and all of the women who have battled and fought this fight.

So… this post is about a few things. Sharing Katie’s story … and reminding you that young women DO get breast cancer… but also reminding you that you can support the fight … in so many ways!

Please leave a comment on this post, and over the next few weeks, I will be randomly selecting winners to receive some really fun items from Hanes Comfort, including Komen T-shirts, Hanes Pink bras, panties and socks as well as a couple of Hanes.com gift cards! (and don’t worry about leaving more than one comment…the software that I am using will only allow for one entry per person anyway, and this giveaway post is about so much more than that anyway….so if you have something to say or share, please do!) I also want you to know, that whether you do or do not donate…will have NO impact on whether or not you can win a prize. The prizes are all just another way to show that we support and care about the fight against Breast Cancer!!

Thanks Hanes… for your support… and Katie… we love you!!!

My husband’s grandmother battled breast cancer and we donate to Komen every October during Breast Cancer Awareness month. God bless your cousin Katie. Keep fighting, girl!

2 Kim Swieder September 9, 2010 at 11:52 am

This is a BIG deal for our family as well, as we lost our cousin earlier this year after a long, heroic battle with Breast Cancer. Our family, including the big burly fellows, are proud to be Pink Warriors in honor of Sis!

3 Heather Y. September 9, 2010 at 11:53 am

Katie, I applaud you! You have to be a strong woman to have breast cancer and twins! I’m not fighting any type of cancer, and I only have one child, and sometimes I don’t know how my eyes are still open, how I’m still walking, or how I even have the strength to keep going! You are an inspiration to so many mothers out here & if anything would ever happen to me that put me in your situation, I hope I have your strength to carry on. Good luck and best wishes against your fight!!! xoxo

4 karin September 9, 2010 at 11:54 am

I had my first mammogram (actually 2)recently at the age of 35. It’s quick and easy. Please talk to your doctor about it.

5 Stephanie Phelps September 9, 2010 at 11:54 am

I am so praying for Katie’s complete recovery. My aunt is also fighting breast cancer so I understand but I guess the my biggest worry is family history and having four son of my own I don’t want to miss out on watching them grow up and have children of their own. God Bless you and your family! Thank you for supporting the awareness of breast cancer and the foundation for constantly raising money for the cure!

6 Marcus Y September 9, 2010 at 11:54 am

I have family members that have fought breast cancer and have not overcome it, but have become stronger woman because of it. My wife wears her support breast cancer pin everyday proudly.

7 Pamela M. September 9, 2010 at 11:55 am

I lost two dear friends to Breast Cancer in the past few months. We need to find a cure! Oh, and last night I received a telemarketing call from “The Breast Cancer Foundation” (never game me a telephone number at the end of the call). I was appalled at the woman on the phone’s comment after I told her I am well aware of the horrors of Breast Cancer after having lost 2 dear friends. She cut me off there and stated without hesitation and very flatly, “Sorry to hear that, they’re in a better place”. WHAT??? How does she know that nor how can she say such a thing! Flames were flying out from my body, to say the least.

8 Lisa Fink September 9, 2010 at 11:58 am

My mother-in-law and grandmother both had breast cancer. This is a movement close to our family.

9 Joan Parker September 9, 2010 at 11:58 am

Praying for Katie and all of the other people out there battling this disease.

10 Kathryn Littler-Fuller September 9, 2010 at 11:59 am

thinking of your cousin and her little twins. Be strong and live long.

11 Nikki Eddy September 9, 2010 at 11:59 am

haven’t known anyone myself, but my best friend’s mother is battling cancer and her grandmother recently passed away from it. She always participates in the Komen foundation where they run all night and this year will be my first time!

12 Jessica September 9, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Your cousin Katie will be in my prayers. It takes such strength to fight this disease and I’m so glad that there are people, companies, and organizations willing to help support the research and resources needed to continue to fight this disease.

13 Ashley September 9, 2010 at 12:03 pm

My grandma died from breast cancer when she was 55 years old. I cannot image how hard that must have been for my mom, I am as old as my mom was when her mom died and I support the fight because I hope I never lose my mom to breast cancer.

14 Kristi C September 9, 2010 at 12:04 pm

My Mother in Law and grandmother are survivors.. always support the cause :0 Prayers to your cousin

15 DanielleCorrelle September 9, 2010 at 12:04 pm

My MIL had breast cancer. My husband recently came home from work to tell me that his fire station just ordered pink work shirts for everyone and they all are to wear them the entire month of October. I thought that was neat, he is going to get one for me too.

16 Amber Norton September 9, 2010 at 12:06 pm

My step-mom discovered that she had breast cancer two Christmases ago. Since then we have been by her side during chemo and radiation. She lost her mom to breast cancer when she was very young and I am glad to say that my step-mom is still here and fighting and I am glad she can enjoy many more days with her grand kids!

17 Sadie September 9, 2010 at 12:06 pm

I has been 2 years since my sister’s diagnosis of breast cancer. Her story is a lot like Katie’s. She was 27. Aggressive tumor, Chemo, Double mastectomy and radiation. She has been clear of cancer for over a year and has gotten married. She is living a “normal” life after cancer.

18 Kristine Twardy-Todd September 9, 2010 at 12:07 pm

I will life up your cousin in prayer! We don’t have a history of breast cancer in my family, but I still do exams and get my yearly check up (I just turned 30) so seeing someone so young get breast cancer does make you realize age doesn’t necessarily matter and how important exams are!

19 Pat September 9, 2010 at 12:07 pm

Oh we all have to love Hanes for stepping up! I lost my mom, one of my sisters and a young cousin to breast cancer. My mom was 61, sister 43(she left 3 young girls ages 6-11) and cousin only 39(she left 2 elementary school age kids). I will put your cousin Katie on my prayer list.
thanks~

20 andrea September 9, 2010 at 12:17 pm

Wow, I’m impressed with Hanes (even with their slow delivery..haha). My mom had breast cancer last year and is doing wonderfully so I have a firsthand experience with it as well.

21 Joann September 9, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Yes, young women do get breast cancer. I lost my cousin last Nov to breast cancer, she was 38, and left a husband and 5 children. I also lost my Mom in May to breast cancer. I certainly know what it can do to a family. Praying for healing for Katie.

22 Jen September 9, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I love all that Hanes does to support the fight against breast cancer. We lost my aunt to breast cancer a few years ago so finding a cure is a cause that is near and dear to me.

23 Lizi serrano September 9, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I think this is great of Hanes… Breast cancer runs in my family and it something I am very concerned about.

24 Adrienne S. September 9, 2010 at 12:27 pm

My Gam fought and overcame breast cancer about 5 years ago… they caught it very early and it was a quick battle. The only other person I’ve known to get breast cancer was a 27 year old coworker who was the single parent of two little girls (toddlers). I was only 18 at the time and learned early that breast cancer doesn’t discriminate by age. Now that I’m less than a year away from the age that she was when she started fighting for her life, I find it even harder to comprehend how she was able to overcome with such a positive attitude. I only hope that if I ever get sick, I can overcome it with as much grace and good humor as she did.

25 Priscilla September 9, 2010 at 12:29 pm

My mother in law is a survivor but it really took a lot out of her.

26 Randi K September 9, 2010 at 12:39 pm

I have quite a few close family and friends who are fighting the battle some worse than others:( It is nice to hear that a company cares enough to help!

27 Geriann September 9, 2010 at 12:43 pm

A prayer said for Katie and all cancer fighters and survivors.

28 Danielle September 9, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Katie-Remember God is good. You go and “fight like a GIRL”. Praying for you and your family.

29 Becky September 9, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Will be thinking about Katie and praying for her. Hoping for a cure soon. Thanks to Hanes for supporting the cause.

30 Jill Dupre September 9, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Thank God I do not know anyone who is or has battled breast cancer. I can say though that I have a nephew about Katies age…also with two young children (2 and 6)and a wife that is currently battling a very aggressive form of t-cell lymphoma. He is having a stem cell transplant as I type this in a hospital in New York City after months of very aggressive chemo. The fight they have to go through I know because I know what my nephew is going through. My best friend is also battling a lymphoma that has no cure. Katie…you and your family are in my prayers..keep on fighting and beat this horrible disease. You are truly an inspiration to others who have the same challenges. You CAN beat this and you WILL win!!!

31 karin September 9, 2010 at 12:54 pm

that is really great of Hanes to show support

32 Tracy September 9, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I also have a friend who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. She is only 35 years old and had NO RISK FACTORS! This disease affects all of us in one way or another. I, too, will pray for Katie, for my dear friend, and for a cure!

33 Cindy T. September 9, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Just wanted to say that I prayed for Katie today!

34 Lisa Collins September 9, 2010 at 12:56 pm

I know your feelings. Unfourtunatley lots of my family members have and are a victim of this terrible disease. Prayers being sent for you and your family and a huge pat on the back to Hanes for stepping up to the plate for this cause!

35 Jennifer Oleson September 9, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I love hearing about companies that are willing to be so supportive in causes–and breast cancer is something that i think all women worry about, regardless of whether it runs through their family. Good job Hanes for joining in the cause and many prayers sent to Katie and her family!!

36 Susan @ Organic Deals September 9, 2010 at 1:11 pm

This has affected my family as well. I am praying for Katie and your family that she beats this and soon!

37 Amy Reems September 9, 2010 at 1:13 pm

It’s so refreshing to hear that companies like Hanes don’t just say they care but show it as well.

38 Teresa F September 9, 2010 at 1:14 pm

I am 34 and have never had a mammogram but I am going to schedule one. I have 4 young children to be here for.

39 Janice K. September 9, 2010 at 1:16 pm

My heart and prayers go out to everyone who is battling cancer or know someone who has. Unfortunately, I know many loved ones who have passed from this disease. This is such a great cause. I applaud Hanes as well for teaming up too. (I actually bought some Hanes socks for my son today)

40 Terri September 9, 2010 at 1:19 pm

My prayers are with Katie! Thank you to Hanes for supporting the cause and I hope that someday there will be a cure.

41 MAIA B September 9, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I am very greatful for this article about young women getting breast cancer because it is so true. Sometimes we think things will never happen but they do. This will inform and help educate so many young women and mothers. Please women who read this check yourselves regularly. Please send my prayers to your cousin. I am happy to see hanes has stepped up to help . That’s so awesome!!! I would love to win something from hanes but I would love even more to hear your cousin is in remission. God Bless.

42 kathleen September 9, 2010 at 1:26 pm

My granmother dies of breast cancer when she was in her 50′s. I was a month old. She was very sick and refused to die until she saw me born. I was born 11/9 she died on 12/12. She only held me once and knowing that she fought long enough to see me and hold me has meant so much to me in my life. I have always felt like she has watched over me in my like she has always been so special too me.

43 Jessica September 9, 2010 at 2:00 pm

Prayers and thoughts are with Katie and her family. My friends and I volunteer every year in our local cancer hospital’s fundraiser (Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo) – hope they find a cure soon!

44 Jennifer M. September 9, 2010 at 2:10 pm

My prayers are with Katie and her family. I can’t even imagine what she must be going through.

45 Melissa September 9, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Prayers go out to Katie and her family! This was just a blessing from you and Hanes to help her and the breast cancer cause! It’s nice to see that there are people and companies that care so much!

46 Brandi September 9, 2010 at 2:16 pm

What a great thing to do. I love that we can use our blogs to bring attention to not only deals, but causes as well. My mom will be walking in the 3 day in October in Washington DC and I am proud of her and support the cause!

47 Rachelle R September 9, 2010 at 2:25 pm

50 DD September 9, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Keri,
Thank you for writing this post and sharing Katie’s story. Awareness is SO important for all ages and not just women. Men are stricken with this disease too.
This is very serious. Help the fight with awareness and self exams!
And Kudos to Hanes for truly caring and making a difference!

51 Jessica September 9, 2010 at 3:34 pm

Our Prayers and thoughts are with Katie and her family Thank you for sharing her courages story…This is such a great thing Hanes is doing! I wish her the best~

52 Danielle September 9, 2010 at 3:37 pm

I’m walking the Komen 3day in Philly this year in memory of my mother-in-law, Kathie. She fought a very brave 25 year battle with breast cancer. Prayers for Katie!

53 sun lutz September 9, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Thank you for sharing Katie’s story. We have come so far in cancer treatment. And today, we have so much hope. Cancer, although serious, is no longer a taboo topic. And for this, I am very glad.

54 Pat September 9, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Keri,

Katie’s story touched my heart as it has everyone else that has read it already. Please have her and her family look at “THE SCAR PROJECT” http://www.thescarproject.org They have a page on Facebook also, where just this week they have put out the new pictures by David Jay. They just announced the book will be out the middle of next month ~ just in time to celebrate BREAST CANCER AWARENESS.

I hope this site can & will help anyone, and everyone who has been touched by this awful disease. I know, it has hit my family also.

And I must commend Hanes for their generosity. They are an awesome company to begin with, and this just proves how much class they “REALLY” have!

55 jen September 9, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Prayers going up for Katie … thank you for sharing her story. I lost my amazing aunt Katherine last year to breast cancer, which took her life at age 48. I promised her I would continue to fight, and will do so, until I’m no longer able. In 15 days, I’ll be walking 60 miles in the Breast Cancer 3 Day – this will be my fifth 3 Day. Walking 60 miles is the least I can do… until there’s a cure!

56 denise stubbs September 9, 2010 at 3:52 pm

My aunt and mom are survivors while I lost my grandmother and a good friend to breast cancer. Thanks Hanes for supporting this cause and thanks Katie for spreading the word

57 Kari C September 9, 2010 at 3:59 pm

63 haidy September 9, 2010 at 6:09 pm

My prayers are with here!
I am also surprized to see Hanes doing that much for the organization.
I know I will be getting Breast cancer one day so I will pray for her and give!
Thank you

64 Ellen September 9, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Thanks for a great giveaway and lots of fun info on your blog. I could use some “pink” stuff :)

65 keriann September 9, 2010 at 6:36 pm

Praying and sending distance Reiki her way! May she find the strength to keep fighting this battle.

66 Karen September 9, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Folks, get annual MAMMOGRAMS….early detection is key.

SAVE THE TATAs :)

Best wishes to Katie and her family!

67 Harmony September 9, 2010 at 6:47 pm

A very touching story – brought tears to my eyes as I am the same age with 2 small children. I will keep your cousin, her children, and all those that love her in my prayers.

68 Jenni K September 9, 2010 at 6:59 pm

Thank you for sharing your story Katie. Self exams are something I never do because I feel like no one my age gets breast cancer. After reading your story and seeing the picture of you with your kids, I will start routinely doing self exams, if not for me, but for my husband and my 1 year old son. Keep fighting and know you have changed the lives of so many people by sharing your story. Thank you!

69 Rachel Benson September 9, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Speaking of breast cancer…My husband and I bought a bunch of yoplaits at the grocery yesterday. I was oblivious to the pink lids. My husband actually pointed out that for every pink lid you send in to yoplait, they will donate 10 cents to Komen for the Cure. Send in your pink lids and support the cause!

70 Sidney September 9, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Katie is my precious DOL and I can’t tell you how much all of your notes meant to me. Thanks to each and every one of you who took the time to share your thoughts. Needless to say I had a good cathartic cry and feel sustained from your collective words. Keri, you are indeed an awesome woman; I love your proactive spirit!

71 erin h September 9, 2010 at 7:26 pm

I have the hope tee from hanes and it’s sparked many conversations. It seems everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer.

72 JEN C September 9, 2010 at 7:36 pm

It’s really great of Hanes to show support for such a great cause.

73 tabitha September 9, 2010 at 7:46 pm

i hope your cousins fight goes as well as it can! i pray she gets better as quickly as possible!

74 sheri grennille September 9, 2010 at 8:05 pm

My grandmother had breast cancer and although my mom, sister and I have so been spared; the worry is there every mammogram and self exam. My husband biked for ACS and we fundraised $750+ for them over the summer – my dad and his dad died of cancer – it is a terrible thing to tell you little girl when she asks why she doesn’t have a grandpa.

75 Shannon V September 9, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Thanks for increasing awareness. I lost a friend in her late twenties to breast cancer. It does not discriminate and can affect anyone. Keeping your cousin in our prayers and hoping for her strength during a tough battle.

76 Sadie September 9, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Breast cancer touches everyone now a days

77 Stephanie September 9, 2010 at 8:13 pm

Wow. I cannot imagine being in Katie’s shoes! What an amazing woman with incredible bravery!!!
My mom has fought an aggressive form of breast cancer and I am sooo happy to say that she is cancer free and has been for a few years. Now comes the scary time in my life…I have to start getting mammograms soon and am terrified with three young boys the potential of getting cancer and what may happen. Cancer is scary and I truly hope they find a cure or better (and affordable) screening. Thank you for sharing Katie’s story with us. Good luck and God bless!!!

78 Lori Thomas September 9, 2010 at 8:41 pm

87 Milian Ortiz September 10, 2010 at 7:27 am

My best friends mother had breast cancer. It was very hard to deal with the possibility of losing a mother and a friend. Cancer makes you feel so helpless.

88 Katie L September 10, 2010 at 8:27 am

THanks for sharing the story and increasing awareness for breast cancer…

89 Susan September 10, 2010 at 8:53 am

It’s hard to imagine there could be a person that this disease hasn’t touched! Hoping for the best for Katie and her family!

90 Dolores Olsen September 10, 2010 at 9:18 am

Hope is what we live with in my family, we walk, we sell cookies. we do every bit we can. And we pray everyday that our young ones live to raise their families. We shall add Katie to our list.

Self exams do save lives.

93 Mary September 10, 2010 at 3:38 pm

My granny has fought breast cancer twice. My prayers and thoughts are with Katie!

94 Joyce September 10, 2010 at 7:45 pm

Praying for Katie and her family. So great to hear the great support Hanes is giving her.

95 Katie September 10, 2010 at 11:32 pm

I just started reding the blog and all the comments. I couldn’t even get through them without starting to cry. I’ve decided the best thing is to read a little everyday, that way when it starts to be too much, i can start again tomorrow. I’m not very good at writing thank you, especially to so many kind hearted souls that don’t even know me. Keri is a cousin I don’t get to see nearly as much as I should and Hanes is an enormous company that I would never imagine would give two thoughts to donating anything on behalf of one sick Oklahoma girl. My family, my friends and most of all I thank you from the bottom of my heart! It has been said before and dammit if I’m not going to say it again, WE WILL FIND A CURE! I’m not going anywhere for a long time!

96 Keri Lyn September 11, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Katie… we just love you to pieces … I know you can do this!! xoxo

97 Lina September 11, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Love andGod dogs forever!

99 Sidney September 12, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Katie, your powerful story has obviously served as inspiration to so many and I am so proud of you. Your courage and grace has certainly inspired me. Never underestimate the power of one! I love you so much.

Such a great cause to fund for. Cancer in general has hit very close to me and my family. In 2001 My uncle was diagnosed with cancer, and it spread so quickly he only lived 6 weeks, 9 months after his passing, his daughter my cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 3 months leaving 3 little children behind. I try and do a breast cancer walk every October and raise funds. Again such a great cause thank you !

111 Daphne R September 14, 2010 at 9:14 pm

I get too emotional when I think about people diagnosis with cancer. I think God gave them the strength to battle it and me the weakness to cry on their behalf. I question why do this has to happen? I want to be hands on with this fight, but how when I can’t keep a dry eye. Tear drops!

112 G. Lanae McIntosh September 14, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Lifting Katie and other women fighting the battle up in prayer. Thank you as her cousin and friend for helping share her story and making us stop and think, act, and continue to keep pressing on for a cure. Bless you!

My aunt passed away 3 years ago from breast cancer. She knew something wasn’t right, but didn’t tell anyone for awhile. Finally after we found out,my cousin made her go see a doctor. She had her breast removed and seem to be okay. She began to get sick again and went back to see her doctor, but it was to late to do anything else.It had spread to her limpnods, bones, and brain. My mom took care of her for a year as she slowly slipped away.It was the hardest thing to have to watch as she got worse. We were always there and in the end she we knew she was at peace. She had no more pain. The reason I wanted to tell so much of her story,is so women know, please don’t wait like she did.You can beat this,And Katie keep fighting,we are all behind you and your family.May God heal you in Jesus name I pray,Amen.

cancer affects so many people. we recently lost my grandmother.

119 VJ September 15, 2010 at 7:16 am

My mother lost her 11 year battle with breast cancer in 2006. I miss her every day. I was tested for the gene and it came back negative. I have been getting mammograms with ultrasound since I was 20. Last year, at age 41, I was diagnosed with LCIS, pre-cancerous cells categorized as stage 0 breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy the day before Thanksgiving. This June, they found another lump. I look at my boys (10 & 7) and can’t bear the thought of them losing their mommy. I am considering a double mastectomy. I have to be strong.. for them, for my husband, for me.

I am impressed that Hanes is so involved in the fight against breast cancer. My mother-in-law and aunt are both survivors, it’s a horrible disease but it can be beat and I am pulling for Katie.

129 paula September 19, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Katie my thoughts and prayers are with you, your children and your family. I have a friend who also had cancer. She was told it had spread so far the treatment and surgery would do no good. She choose to have it anyway….That was 9 yrs. ago! She is cancer free today! Prayer changes everything! God Bless you and your family.

130 Amy Blackwell September 19, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Praying for Healing For Katie! I will be praying for wisdom in the Doctor’s treatment. Peace for Katie and family! Praying that Katie has the strength to beat this and that she will be stronger for it. I will pray so that she does not get Discouraged. “I can do all things through Christ who Strengthens Me.” Phillipians 4:13 tell her to hold scripture in her memory and her heart and she will get through happier and healthier since God will heal her.

131 Lonnita Carter September 19, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Prayer changes everything! I am praying for Katie and my other sisters in Christ, that this disease be conquer by women kind! Tell her to never give up and the battle is not hers, it’s the Lord and just hand it over to Him.

Oh Katie! I’ve “been there, done that” at age 39! (no small twins to care for but it was my daughters 1st year of collage and a 10 yr. old son at home.) All that to say… God is good and He has great plans for you. Hold on to the hope that He will NOT give you any more than you can bear! Blessings and Hugs and many prayers for you. And a HUGE THANK YOU to our super supportive FAMILY MEMBERS that keep us lifted up.
